Sam Nunn Atlanta
Federal Center shines with ENERGY STAR
With efforts from the General Services Administration
(GSA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department
of Energy (DOE) and GSAs building operations contractor,
Brooks Range, the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center (AFC)
in Atlanta has been designated an ENERGY STAR building.
A short event convened in the lobby of the AFC to celebrate
this accomplishment on April 19th at noon. Danny Orlando
from EPA and John Adams from DOE spearheaded the team
efforts to achieve ENERGY STAR status. Traci Leath,
Lisa Hollingsworth and
Danny Orlando from GSA and EPA planned this event.
Interesting facts on this effort:
| |
The AFC is GSAs largest facility
in the Southeast2 million square feet. |
| |
EPA Region 4 offices are located in
the building along with many other federal agencies.
Overall occupancy exceeds 5,000 people. |
| |
This past October the team coordinating
this effort received one of the national Federal
Energy and Water Management Awards (more info at
www.eere.energy.gov/femp/services/awards_fewm2004.cfm). |
| |
The AFC is saving $200,000 annually
as a result of this effort. |
| |
Improvements were focused on building
commissioning, some repair/replacement of minor
equipment, and a tenant education effort. |
| |
The next goal is for the AFC to become
LEED-EB (existing building) certified. |
| |
GSA is using this effort as a model
in the region and hopes to generate additional savings
and encourage more GSA ENERGY STAR buildings in
the Southeast. |
