About the Million Solar Roofs Initiative

The Million Solar Roofs Initiative (MSR) is enabling businesses and communities to install solar systems on one million rooftops across the United States by 2010. The US Department of Energy has partnered with The Southface Energy Institute in Atlanta, GA, to help implement the policy.

This initiative will increase momentum in the U.S. for more widespread use of solar power. Increasing the demand for solar energy systems, photovoltaic, solar hot water and solar space heating systems will lower the cost of these technologies, making them more accessible to the general public. And, this heightened awareness will put the American solar energy industry in a stronger position in the expanding international renewable-energy market.

The Solar Road Map

Southface’s role in this initiative includes increasing community awareness of solar energy, expanding the use of solar technologies, addressing specific issues that prevent consumers from using solar energy systems and encouraging builders and developers to include solar energy systems in new construction. This project aims to make the use of solar systems, both thermal and electric, a viable and economically feasible alternative for home and commercial buildings.

Business owners, homeowners, builders, developers, city planners, local governments, architects, engineers and all other citizens in our communities will soon become aware of the possibilities of solar energy. It is hoped that in the future, solar energy contractors will be abundant, equipment suppliers common, and solar systems can be readily available at home improvement stores.
